“Snowflake” Bentley

Dreaming of a white Christmas here, rather than the eternal rain…

If you don’t have snow either, please take a look at the photographs of Wilson Alwyn “Snowflake” Bentley (February 9, 1865 – December 23, 1931), one of the first known photographers of snowflakes. He perfected a process of catching flakes on black velvet in such a way that their images could be captured before they either melted or sublimated.

Despite the technical limitation of the equipment used at the time, his images are so strikingly beautiful that hardly anybody bothered to photograph snowflakes for almost 100 years.
